Like fungus, lichens fascinate me, I think they have a beauty all of their own. I know that lichens are a unique combination of fungus and an alga living as one unit. I have also read that you only find them where the conditions are absolutely perfect. We inherited this tree when we moved here, it is a maple, its leaves are pink and green and it gets the most beautiful seed pods hanging from it in autumn. Does anyone know what type it is?

We have lichens on our trees too :-) I was told that lichens only grow where the air is pure so its reassuring to have them in our garden. I hope the frost doesn't do too much damage to our plants. Stay warm!
I have lichens on some stone lanterns in my garden but none on trees yet as none get that much shade to encourage their growth.

I note you are a gardener. I had a license once for that here where I live but gave it up. Now or for the past 47 years I have just tried to make this into a place suitable for wildlife and a kind of habitat or sanctuary.

I think I have the same one,grows in a dome shape, mine had flowers and seed pods last year. I don't know what it is called though.
